Meet Pieter

MEET JUDGE TEEUWISSEN –

Please allow me to introduce myself to some and refresh the recollection of others regarding my career.  I am Pieter Teeuwissen, YOUR Hinds County Court Judge for civil matters.

At age six I moved to the campus of Tougaloo College where my father was a professor and my mother was active in community good trouble.  Enrolling at age 16, I became a Tougaloo College graduate where I pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. worked in Upward Bound and met my wife, Lisa Moman Moorehead.  With my wife Lisa, we are the blessed parents of a son, three daughters and two grandchildren.  We have lived in the same Jackson house for 30 years, near our church home, New Hope Baptist Church .

After studying public policy and economics at Princeton University as a Sloan Fellow, I attended the University of Minnesota Law School before returning to Mississippi with a commitment to service.  I have practiced law for 34 years with over two decades of public service –including service as YOUR city legal counsel under Mayors Frank Melton, Harvey Johnson, Jr., and Chokwe Lumumba, Sr.  After serving the City of Jackson, I served as YOUR Hinds County Board Attorney from 2013 - 2020.  Other public service includes, by appointment from the Mississippi Supreme Court, serving as a Hinds County special circuit judge and Chair of the Board of Bar Admissions..
The Hinds County civil court docket does not handle criminal matters nor youth court matters.  Those dockets are presided over by Senior Judge Johnnie McDaniels and Judge Carlyn Hicks, respectively.  Civil court involves money matters up to $200,000 such as rent and housing disputes, debt collections, accident cases and contract disputes. Importantly, Hinds County Court is the only eminent domain court for Jackson and Hinds County.  Hinds County Court can also hear any civil matter that could be heard in chancery or circuit court.  The Honorable LaRita Cooper-Stokes was our previous Hinds County Court civil judge, and it is an honor to follow her in this seat as we worked together at the start of my career.

I am asking for YOUR VOTE on NOVEMBER 5th to “Keep Judge Tee!”  In the
meantime, if you have any business in the Hinds County civil court, please come to court – even if you don’t have a lawyer.  I strive to treat everyone with respect, and to make sure EVERYONE has an opportunity to get justice.

- Hon. Pieter Teeuwissen,
HINDS COUNTY COURT CIVIL JUDGE
